Causes of Renal Disease

  • Diabetes, approximately 138,483 cases of renal disease in 2001 were caused by diabetes.
  • Hypertension can cause renal disease as well as be a result of renal disease. Approximately 91,636 cases of renal disease were caused by hypertension in 2001.
  • The third most common cause of renal disease is glomerulonephritis and in 2001 this condition caused 7,687 cases of renal disease.
  • Cystic kidney is the fourth most common cause of renal disease and in 2001 caused 2,143 cases of renal disease.
  • All other causes of renal disease in 2001 resulted in 17,243 cases.

Function of the Kidney

  • The kidneys filter waste materials and excess fluid from the blood.
  • The kidneys also produce hormones that are important for blood formation, blood pressure, and bone formation.
  • Blood enters the kidney through the renal artery in is processed in tiny tubes called nephrons and is returned to the body's circulation through the renal veins.
  • The waste substances that are filtered out in the nephrons form urine which is collected in the central part of the kidney and then pass through the tubes called ureters to the bladder.

Consequences of Kidney Failure

  • Acute kidney failure is sudden in onset and is usually caused by a toxin of some sort. This type of kidney failure may be reversible if the causes are removed.
  • Chronic kidney failure is of slower onset and is usually not reversible.
  • Decreased kidney function can cause complications in virtually all organ systems.
  • Reduced kidney function can cause high blood pressure. Approximately 23% of kidney failure patients suffer high blood pressure.
  • A reduction in the ability to produce red blood cells causing anemia can also be a consequence of kidney failure. This can be treated with blood transfusions or medications such as iron and erythropoietin.
  • Development of cardiovascular disease is considered an outcome of kidney disease.
  • Bone disease such as osteoporosis is common due to altered calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood.
  • Changes in mental status including agitation, lethargy, fluctuating moods, difficulty paying attention and dementia or loss of mental function.
  • Increased risk of infections.

Impact on Patients

  • In End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) the patient may not get the nutrition needed due to altered taste,
anorexia, nausea and an unpalatable diet.
  • Protein and calorie malnutrition is a problem in many ESRD patients.
  • This malnutrition is one of the strongest predictors of morbidity and mortality.
  • Patients with low serum albumin levels are at risk for malnutrition.
  • Patients may have difficulty finding foods that supply high quality protein that allows their body to maintain itself while limiting the amount of urea that is formed.

Potential Demand for Albumax

  • Albumax supplies only the highest quality whey protein isolate along with two nutritional substances known to be beneficial to dialysis patients, L-carnitine and Arginine, in a powder form. Albumax may be mixed with or sprinkled on other foods. Albumax will not raise the fluid intake of the patient and will not add anything to the patient's diet that may be inappropriate for that patient.
  • Albumax contains calcium caseinate which contains enough calcium to bind the phosphorus content in Albumax in addition to being a second source of protein.
  • Current nutritional supplements either are not designed specifically with the dialysis patient in mind or do not contain the amount of high quality whey protein isolate per dose that is in Albumax.
