Diet Modification for the Dialysis Patient.

  • Loss of kidney function can cause the body to become overloaded with fluid between dialysis sessions. This may cause high blood pressure, shortness of breath, swelling of the legs, hands, face, and in some cases congestive heart failure.
  • To prevent such symptoms fluid intake must be closely monitored. Fluids include anything that is a liquid at room temperature such as Jell-O and ice cream. A daily fluid allowance is usually calculated by a dietician.
  • There are many dietary restrictions and controls that are necessary for the dialysis patient. Some minerals and vitamins can be harmful to the dialysis patient. Loss of kidney function may cause these vitamins and minerals may build up in the blood. Certain foods that are high in restricted minerals and vitamins must be severely limited or avoided completely.
  • Potassium levels must be controlled carefully. High potassium levels can affect heart rhythm, and potassium levels can rise between dialysis sessions. Many foods are high in potassium and must be regulated in the diet.
  • Phosphorus is also found in many foods and must be controlled also. High phosphorus levels will pull calcium from the bones and cause the bones to become brittle and subject to breakage. Many dialysis patients must take a phosphorus binder medication to prevent the build up of phosphorus.
  • Sodium must be limited in the diet to help control thirst so that the dialysis patient does not consume too much fluid. Dialysis patients are encouraged to eat low sodium foods and use spices in cooking rather than salt.
  • Protein is a building block of muscle and is instrumental in tissue repair, however protein breaks down into the waste product urea which can build up in the blood and make the dialysis patient very sick. It is important that the dialysis patient be well nourished and most dialysis patients are encouraged to have a high protein diet. A high quality protein will produce less waste than some lower quality proteins so it is important to use a high quality protein for the dialysis patient's diet.

Impact on Patients

  • In End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) the patient may not get the nutrition needed due to altered taste,
anorexia, nausea and an unpalatable diet.
  • Protein and calorie malnutrition is a problem in many ESRD patients.
  • This malnutrition is one of the strongest predictors of morbidity and mortality.
  • Patients with low serum albumin levels are at risk for malnutrition.
  • Patients may have difficulty finding foods that supply high quality protein that allows their body to maintain itself while limiting the amount of urea that is formed.

Potential Demand for Albumax

  • Albumax supplies only the highest quality whey protein isolate along with two nutritional substances known to be beneficial to dialysis patients, L-carnitine and Arginine, in a powder form. Albumax may be mixed with or sprinkled on other foods. Albumax will not raise the fluid intake of the patient and will not add anything to the patient's diet that may be inappropriate for that patient.
  • Albumax contains calcium caseinate which contains enough calcium to bind the phosphorus content in Albumax in addition to being a second source of protein.
  • Current nutritional supplements either are not designed specifically with the dialysis patient in mind or do not contain the amount of high quality whey protein isolate per dose that is in Albumax.
